Caravaggio. Painter who changed the art world

Over four hundred years ago in Europe was a battle between two of Christian branch – Catholic and Protestant. As well-known Protestant Reformation began in the 16th century and this new religion movement conquered the world. People were promised fairer a way to God: the straight link with Jesus Christ by reading Bible instead of listening to priests, personal belief instead of observing of rites, and refusal to obey by the Pope. It’s obvious that Catholic elite didn’t want to allow it, so they were trying to come up with something new in order to tackle their opponents. But what could old priests offer? The answer is Caravaggio, a painter who made a new type of religion art.

Caravaggio was an Italian artist born in 1571. He came to Rome in 1592 where he created his masterpieces – “The Calling of St Matthew”, “The Crucifixion of St. Peter” and others. What is the most important in his artworks? Firstly, he was changing people’s attitude to Bible plots while priests thought only about how to restrict and scary paupers and to get more money from rich. Caravaggio depicted events in very natural form in order to show the real feelings and actions: painful, tortures, passions, devotion. And, of course, everyone was shocked because nobody before hadn’t done that. This artist made the meaning of this religion clearer for simple people, and it was vital – words couldn’t affect imagination as visual art did.

The second significant thing in Caravaggio’s paintings is using of metaphors. For instance, in his artwork “The Beheading of St John the Baptist” is shown a key that can be explained as claustrophobia’s symbol; it makes us to be scared and feels participation in this execution. Another example of symbolism is “Young Sick Bacchus”. Bacchus (Dionysus) is the Greek god that is associated with entertainment, wine and fertility. Of course, the god must be looked perfect, young and attractive. But why is he sick? Perhaps, Caravaggio hints at the aesthetical gloom of the Christianity God which won?

Finally, the last feature, that should be mentioned, is the link between Caravaggio’s art and his life. He is believed to be a pretty unpleasant and conflictual person. Caravaggio afforded to insult his colleagues and even to fight with them. Probably, that’s why this genius drew himself in some artworks where he chose bad roles for himself, especially if we look at his “David with the Head of Goliath” which was made after a murder committed by Caravaggio. He killed a man, and maybe the art is like opportunities to be forgiven.

In conclusion, I’d like to add words by Maxim Gorky: “There are only two forms of life – decay and burning”. And Caravaggio was burning very bright until he blinded himself.

Мой совет прост: выбирайте любую тему и пишите или говорите о ней на английском, вникая в детали и пытаясь сделать из этого исследовательскую работу.
