Да, это язык тех игр, в которых мы с Вами ничего не смыслим, в особенности выражений из бейсбола и американского футбола. В этой статье я познакомлю Вас с 15-ю самыми распространенными идиомами, половину из которых я употребляю в речи как минимум раз в неделю (это при умеренном общении с носителями языка).
- touch base with smb пообщаться с кем-л. (особенно после долгой разлуки), I need to meet with her to touch base.
- she's in a rebound relationship - она быстро нашла себе другого (обычно негативное высказывание об отношениях). I'm not sure if it's a good relationship. She broke up just last week, and now she met this new guy. She's in a rebound relationship.
- cover all your bases - разобрать (рассмотреть) что-то очень детально. We've spent about an hour on this topic. I'm sure we covered all the bases.
- he's on the ball - он "рулит". This guy is on the ball today, I feel like he knows the answers to all questions.
- it's a totally different ball game - это совсем другая история. It's easy to say that when you don't have kids. Once you have at least one child - it's a totally different ball game.
- blow the competition away - дать жару конкурентам. This approach will blow all of our competition away.
- across the board - везде без исключения. The new rules were introduced across the board.
- call the shots - принимать решения. John usually calls the shots in all our meetings.
- front runner - человек, от которого ожидают победы. Jenny is a front runner for CFO position.
- get a head start - начать раньше всех остальных. We got a head start on this project, that's why we were done sooner than others.
- get into the full swing - чувствовать себя комфортно в новой роли. It took me a few months before I got into the full swing of things in this new place.
- get a second wind - "получить" второе дыхание. Somewhere in the middle of the month I got a second wind that allowed me to complete my project sooner.
- go overboard - сделать или сказать больше, чем нужно (чересчур много), используется в негативном контексте. Whenever she runs meetings she tends to go overboard when giving instructions.
- have the upper hand - иметь бОльший шанс выиграть (держать под контролем). These people want to have the upper hand in everything.
- the home stretch - завершающая стадия. I think we're in the home stretch of our pre-launch activities.
