The majority of people buy new clothes, but different people do it for different reasons. Since fashion is an exciting topic to me, I have chosen to do a project on why Zetlanders buy new clothes. I have found some related data, presented in the table.
It is obvious from the table that the leader of the opinion polls is the people’s desire to replace worn-out clothes (40%). Keeping up with fashion goes second with 31% of the respondents, lagging behind the leader by 9 percentage points. The third place is occupied by giving clothes as a present (16%).
If we sum up the percentage of the following reasons: following fashion, improving mood and enriching wardrobe, we will get 44% of the respondents who buy new clothes not out of necessity. It is almost as often as replacing shabby clothes (40%). This figure reflects the current fast-fashion trend.
I assume that shopping for clothes, especially its current way of doing, creates a problem. According to the data, approximately a half of the respondents buy new clothes without real need, and as a consequence, there are tons of clothes which have been only worn once or twice. A solution to this problem can be avoiding impulse purchases and giving a second chance to your clothes.
In conclusion, I would like to say that, in my opinion, fashion does not play a big role in our lives because, if you look carefully, you will notice that it is recurring and you do not have to buy new clothes every season. Maybe, you already have something stylish in you wardrobe from the past.
