Либретто тоже часто меняется, пусть и не так сильно, как хореография, костюмы и декорации, следующие за модой и технологиями новых времен, но лишь музыка — фундамент балетного представления, его основа, задающая как стилистику всего балета, так и определяющая, сколько ему жить — месяцы, десятилетия или столетия. Именно балетная музыка — генетический код всего балета в целом, что, как никто другой, понимал один из величайших хореографов ХХ века, Баланчин, говоривший, что старается подбирать для своих балетов самую красивую музыку для того, чтобы зритель, которому не понравится хореография, мог спокойно закрыть глаза и насладиться просто музыкой.
Музыка — душа балета, задающая эмоцию танцу, требующая от него ритма, нанизывающая движения на логику и чувственность мелодии, составляющая фразы и расставляющая абзацы из балетных па. Говорят, балет — немая пантомима с определенными условностями, но нет. Это не так. Голос балета — музыка. Это многоголосие сотни оркестровых инструментов, рассказывающих зрителю настоящую историю того, что происходит на сцене с танцорами, костюмами, декорациями и многим другим под командованием хореографии.
