Chess Chess is a game played by two contestants on a square board. Played with white and black pieces. Move the white pieces first. Chess has sixty four squares. A square board has eight rows (rank) and eight columns (file). White and black squares alternate. Often the chess board is seen in light and dark, white and black, white and brown, white and dark green. The white corner of the chess board is to the player's right. Sixteen white pieces play another sixteen black pieces. That means two rooks, two knights, two bishops, one king, one queen and eight pawns. The pieces are placed from position to right in the first row Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen, King, Bishop, Knight, Rook. Eight pawns are placed in the second row. In this the queen is placed in her own suit. Black and white pieces are placed in a respectively. A pawn may move one or two squares forward in an unoccupied row (file) on its first move. A pawn can occupy that space when an opponent's piece is on a square. There are two special moves - capture and promotion. A rook can move any number of squares in rows (rank) and columns (file), but cannot jump over other pieces. King Special Move Castling Rook was involved. A knight can jump two squares vertically and one square horizontally or two squares horizontally and one square vertically on other pieces to any adjacent square in an "L" pattern. A bishop cannot jump squares onto other pieces moving diagonally. A Queen Rook bishop was empowered. Other pieces cannot jump but all squares (rank, file) can move straight and diagonally. A king moves one square in any direction. There is also a special move called castling, which involves moving the king and rook. The object of the game is to checkmate the opponent.
