Good Burger (1997)
I know Good Burger is bad but I laughed with or at it quite a bit. Based on the sketch of the same name from the Nickelodeon series All That, Good Burger employees Ed (Kel Mitchell) and Dexter (Kenan Thompson) learn the restaurant might have to close its doors. Rival Mondo Burger, with its giant meat patties, is opening a new location across the street. It’s up to our two mismatched heroes to save the restaurant from the evil corporation that would have them out of a job. Actors Thompsons and Mitchell are delightfully goofy and give their roles their all...

The Amityville Horror (1979)
What’s scarier than The Amityville Horror? Remembering it was really good, telling all the naysayers they were wrong for years and then rewatching it to find out you were the one who was wrong all along. “Based on true events” it’s the story of the Lutz family, who move into a big ol’ house where, a year before, the entire household was murdered by their teenage son. Soon after they settle in, weird stuff starts happening and everyone gets mighty scared. The setup is terrific. The house itself is awesome and frightening from the get-go...

Leatherheads (2008)
I decided to check out Leatherheads even though I'd heard little about it. By this I mean I knew of its existence but heard no talk of it at all. No good word-of-mouth or complaints whatsoever. It’s as if anyone who saw it had nothing to say. Probably because the movie isn’t really bad, but it’s not great either. I guess it’s just kind of ok. In 1925, Jimmy "Dodge" Connelly (George Clooney) wants to be a professional football player. Trouble is, there’s no such thing in Duluth, Minnesota. When Dodge...

Inuyasha the Movie 2: The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass (2002)
The audience for Inuyasha the Movie 2: The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass is even narrower than you'd expect. It’s not for people who've never seen the TV show - that’s a given. You'd expect it to be aimed at hardcore fans of the show, but I don’t think they'll like it either. Inuyasha the Movie 2 is only for religious zealots devoted to the church of InuYasha that absolutely refuse to recognize something bad even when all logical evidence points towards this logical conclusion or indiscriminating fans who only vaguely remember it...

Alpha Dog (2006)
When I sat down to watch Alpha Dog, the odds were stacked against it. Not only did a lady at my video store accidentally spoil the ending for me, but I didn’t exactly see myself warming up to a bunch of spoiled rich kids who have nothing better to do than drink and consume copious amounts of drugs. I found it emotional; a poignant drama with sharp moments of tension. Based on real-life events, 15-year-old Zack Mazursky (Anton Yelchin) who is kidnapped by a gang of drug dealers led by Johnny Truelove (Emile Hirsch)...

From Hell (2001)
It’s been some since I read Allan Moore and Eddie Campbell’s From Hell but I remember two things about it: the length and amount of research poured into it. This film adaptation is by no means as definitive as the graphic novel but it is as compelling, believable, and frightening.  In Whitechapel, London, 1888, a serial killer is targeting prostitutes. The crimes' brutality leaves the city in a state of shock and the police are ill-equipped to stop whoever is responsible. Whitechapel Police Inspector Frederick Abberline (Johnny Depp) is charged with finding answers...

The Big White (2005)
The Big White could've worked, but it contains too many misfires. Robin Williams plays a troubled man named Paul who discovers a dead body. He figures this is his chance to turn lemons into lemonade when he passes the body as that of his long-absent jerk of a brother in an attempt to cash a life-insurance policy. Easier said than done. Is it too much to ask from a black comedy to have likable characters or the opposite, people so despicable you want to follow them just to see how life will punish...

Old School (2003)
Old School has some good laughs, enough to make you overlook a familiar story. When Mitch Martin (Luke Wilson) breaks up with his girlfriend and moves into a house located near the campus of Harrison University, he gets roped into hosting wild parties in his new home by his old buddies Frank "The Tank" Ricard (Will Ferrell) and Bernard Campbell (Vince Vaughn). To appease the crusty old Dean (Jeremy Piven) and show him who's what, they decide to turn their place into a legitimate fraternity house...

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (2010)
I don’t want to say that Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is a disappointment. It's a well made horror film. I must admit, however, that I expected more. 8-year-old Sally (Bailee Madison) moves into the big house her father (Guy Pearce) and his girlfriend (Katie Holmes) are renovating. Inside, she hears whispers coming from tiny critters who are after her. I don’t really have much to criticize about Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. The only thing would be that I wish the film had focussed more on Sally and given us the whole story from her point of view...
