In English culture, fairy tales occupy a special place. They allow us to escape from reality and plunge into a fantasy world where anything is possible. Thanks to these eternal stories, we not only learn something new, but also feel part of something bigger - magical and unknown.
An Old English word talu (modern tale) was used in reference to any story, not necessarily a fictional one. The concept of a fairy tale only appeared in England at the end of the 19th century, when a folklorist Joseph Jacobs created a collection of magical stories "English Fairy Tales".
It is interesting that the presence of actual fairies and other magical creatures in these stories is not necessary. Jacobs's goal was to catch the attention of the younger generation, so he decided that young Englishmen were more likely to reach for a collection of fairy tales rather than a book of folk tales.
