Job interview_ France
People are looking for different kinds of jobs today. It can be a freelance position, a project, or a short or long-term contract. Let’s imagine you applied for a job in France and were invited to an interview.
What is culture-specific about a job interview in France?
1) Manners
- Formality: address the interviewer as “Monsieur” or “Madame”; use the ‘vous’ form, never - ‘tu’ – it will be considered rude.
- Forms of address: always use Madame or Monsieur, and no first names.
- Greetings: light handshake, not long, not many up and down movements (one or two).
- Dress code: smart and well-groomed. No jeans! France is a fashion-caring country, but don’t show off. Being dressed up will not be appreciated.
- Punctuality: come to your interview a little early, 5-10 minutes would be OK.
- Documents: have extra copies of your CV, letter of motivation, and professional qualifications.
- Not much small talk.
2) Questions you may be asked during the interview
- Tell us about yourself.
- Why do you want this job? Take this project?
- Why do you want to work for this company?
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- What do you know about this company?
- What would you do if …?
3) Questions for foreigners
- Can you explain your credentials?
- Why do you want to work in France?
- Are you here for long?
- When can you start?
4) Tips
- If you have any salary expectations be ready to negotiate. It’s common. But you will have to defend your reasoning.
- Don’t interrupt the interviewer, but don’t be surprised to be interrupted while speaking. It’s not really considered rude.
- Try to make an impression of a knowledgeable and motivated person. This is something that your potential French employer will value.
