сегодня во время моего ежедневного ритуала по прочтению вебтуна "Истинная красота" на английском мне встретилось довольно много необычных словосочетаний, так что я решила поделиться ими здесь)
вместе с примерами получилось немного много букв, поэтому 2 часть я выложу завтра, а сейчас давайте пополним наш vocabulary!
ЧАСТЬ 1
plain Jane — a female who is not considered physically attractive by societal standards (серая мышь):
Betty always felt like she was a plain Jane, so she was very surprised when the most handsome boy in school asked her to be his prom date.
to get one's act together — 1. to take action to become well-organized, prepared, or in a better state of life (подготовиться):
You need to get your act together and finish packing so that we can leave for the airport on time tomorrow morning.
2. to organize one's thoughts, often with the aim of regaining one's calm (привести себя в порядок):
I really need to get my act together before I go into the board meeting.
up to one's eyeballs in something — extremely busy (with something); deeply or overly involved (in something); possessing, filled up with, or overwhelmed by an excessive amount (of something) — по уши в (p.s. есть полный аналог up to one’s ears in something):
There's no way I can take a vacation right now, I'm up to my eyeballs in work at the moment!
to snag — to get or catch something by acting quickly (заполучить):
They'd have gone bust (shut down) if they hadn't snagged that contract from their rivals.
to have eyes for someone — 1. to be romantically interested in or devoted to someone (испытывать симпатию):
You can tell by the way she looks at him that Beth has eyes for Trent.
2. to be focused on or interested in something, often at the expense of other things (обращать внимание):
Our government only has eyes for the big cities, leaving our small rural towns to rot by the wayside.
versatile — being able to change easily from one activity to another or able to be used for many different purposes (разноплановый, разнообразный):
A leather jacket is a timeless and versatile garment (a piece of clothing) that can be worn in all seasons.
to be in/out of the loop — to be in-/uninformed about and/or (not) involved in something, such as a plan or project, especially that which involves or pertains (be connected) to a specific group (быть в/не курсе):
We've hired a new intern to help you with data entry, so she needs to be in the loop about the project too.
to hold one's liquor — to have a high tolerance for alcohol (пить и не пьянеть):
I'm sorry for acting like such a fool at the party — I don't even remember what happened. I guess I just can't hold my liquor.
to whip up — to prepare, create, or put something together (подготовить):
I haven't written my report yet, but I'll whip one up before the deadline.
jolt — to move suddenly and violently (дернуться):
The train stopped unexpectedly and we were jolted forwards.
