Hello friends!

Today we want to tell you more about the region where our project was born and breathes. Namely, about the Alazani Valley. The principality, which arose in the 8th century, later became a territory in the east of Sakartvelo. The sunny plain at an altitude of 200-450 meters above sea level is washed by the Agrichay and Alazani rivers. On the northern side it borders on the mountainous regions of Khevsureti, Pshavi and Tusheti. From the eastern and southern sides, Kakheti borders Azerbaijan. The regional center and heart of Kakheti is the city of Telavi.

In addition to beautiful ancient architecture, the Alazani Valley is famous for its rich vineyards. It is believed that about 60% of all grapes in Georgia are grown in Kakheti. The reason for this is climate, soil and, of course, traditions.

By the way, the climate here is very similar to the southern Italian Alps. It is subtropical in most of the region. Given all the precipitation in the region, the climate in Kakheti is rather dry rather than humid. There are much more sunny days here, which is sometimes accompanied by droughts, but it makes it possible for the berries to be fully saturated with sunlight and get the same taste and aroma.

Kakhetian wines compete confidently in the world market for export. To a large extent - thanks to the special character of the wines, which is created using a unique method of cooking in Qvevri. As we have already said, qvevri is an earthen vessel that is entirely placed underground. Only the throat remains on the surface, where the grape juice is poured. From clay and temperature underground, the wine acquires certain taste qualities. Qvevri is an important and integral part of Georgian winemaking, but each winery does things differently when it comes to the other nuances of production.

Our vineyard is located in the Kakheti village of Magraani, Akhmeta municipality (42.06967 45.36755), on the lands of which the Kisi grape grows - an interesting and rather rare white grape variety. The wine made from these berries has a structured rich taste and a rich bouquet.

In the following posts, we will tell you more about this variety and the family of Benedict and Julia, winemakers and founders of the Mygeo Wine project, and we’ll try to get closer to winemaking secrets. Stay tuned!
