1. Navigation Assistance: Cadets help officers with chart plotting, monitoring equipment (like radar and GPS), and maintaining the ship’s logbook.
Example:Updating nautical charts and reporting position changes.
2. Watchkeeping – They stand bridge watches, observing surroundings and reporting hazards.
Example:Monitoring for other vessels during night watches.
3. Cargo Operations: Assisting with loading/unloading, securing cargo, and checking safety gear.
Example: Inspecting lashing equipment before departure.
4. Maintenance & Safety: Performing deck maintenance (painting, cleaning) and participating in safety drills.
Example: Joining fire drills and learning emergency procedures.
5. Documentation: Keeping records of inspections, repairs, and inventories.
Example: Logging daily maintenance work.
6. Training & Learning: Cadets must study regulations (COLREGs, SOLAS) and practice seamanship skills (knots, signaling).
