In high school and college, there are names for students in each year:

freshman = first-year student

sophomore = second-year student

Second-year students were referred to as “sophy more,” which stems from the Greek words for clever or wise (’sophos’) and foolish (’moros’). Merging the two terms created an oxymoron describing second-year students as “wise fools.”

junior = third-year student

senior = fourth-year student

Sophomores are required to take this class.
