The Story Long ago, a man named Guy Fawkes was part of a group that planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. They wanted to kill King James I. On November 4th, 1605, Guy Fawkes was caught with barrels of gunpowder under the building. The king was safe, and Guy Fawkes was arrested. Soon, people started celebrating that the king and Parliament were safe. They lit bonfires and burned effigies (figures) of Guy Fawkes. Nowadays, Guy Fawkes Day is a fun autumn celebration: There is a famous short poem about this day: Remember, remember the fifth of November, Gunpowder, treason and plot.
