EDUC 5271 Discussion Forum Unit 6

The title of the resource this week is, ‘Developing literacy and creative writing through story making: story strands for 7-12-year-olds (Bowkett, 2010)’.  In two to three paragraphs, analyze two different strategies and evaluate their importance in helping to develop literacy and creative writing through story making. Reference this Unit’s reading resources to support your ideas.

Dear Dr. Glenn and Colleagues,

An essay is a discourse on a given topic, a statement of one's emotions and thoughts in a text. At school, essays are written from elementary school - at first they are descriptions of pictures or a view from a window. In high school, teenagers are offered to analyze literary works and reflect on eternal themes: friendship and love, life and death, choice of profession. Students write essays not only on literature, but also on history, social studies and foreign languages.

A good command of written language is indispensable not only in studies - in the future this skill can become a competitive advantage in work and even the main source of income (journalism, copywriting, blogging).

I have been writing poetry since I was twelve years old for more than 20 years. I write mostly in Russian, but recently I tried it in English. Here's what I managed to do (Post by Ekaterina Schyogoleva, 2024):

I come from the south.

I'm not keen on snow.

I'm not happy, you know,

Walking down the cold wind.

I need warmth and care

That just the sun's able t' give

To make me thrive and believe

That everyone can be dare

My love was born sunny

He's full of bright colours

Surrounded marvellous

He's precious, my honey.

When a poem is written, we can say that it was an interesting experience and can be repeated, but if you force an ordinary person to write a poem, even in his own language, he will have a panic attack.

Our young students often cannot boast of years of practice in writing sentences (n.d.). Nor are they yet able to communicate their thoughts coherently to others to the extent that their more talented peers can. Not everyone is born with the gift of words, but fortunately, the skill of essay writing can be developed.

'Developing literacy and creative writing through story making: story strands for 7-12-year-olds (Bowkett, 2010)' is not my first book on teaching writing. But it is the first book whose practical experience can hardly be overemphasized. First of all, I'm madly in love with the six question method, specifically the Big Six of what, where, when, who, how and why. I even have my  favourite website for storyboarding, but with this methodology, the work will be even more fun for students.

Story Cards (n.d.)

Deal the cards and then try to create a story using as many of the pictures as possible. How you interpret the cards is up to you.

Next, I want to share another resource to help give a visual representation of a story. There are certainly many benefits to Story Grid, but take a look at these examples (How to Write a Short Story from Start to Finish, 2023):

Thus, it is possible to teach writing through the development of students' imagination with the help of a picture, or it is possible to give the skeleton of a story that needs to be filled with meaning.

In conclusion, I would like to share the method of imitation, which is based on retelling a story. As an example, I would like to cite my experience with the story Goldy Locks and Three Bears
