The style of pedagogical communication of a teacher affects not only the academic performance of their students, but also the psychological factors of students' learning activities. It should be noted that the style of teacher's communication with students directly affects the atmosphere of emotional well-being in the team, which affects the effectiveness of learning activities of Students With Emotional or Behavioral Disorders (Sutherland et al, 2008).
The purpose of education nowadays is the general cultural, personal and cognitive development of students, which, in turn, provides such a key competence as the ability to learn. In order for a child to learn to the fullest extent of his/her abilities, it is necessary to arouse their desire (interest) to study, to knowledge, to help the child to believe in themselves and their abilities. Of course, every teacher wants his or her students to attend school with desire and interest. However, it is not uncommon for teachers and parents to notice that after a certain period of time, students' motivation decreases and they become less and less interested in going to school (Desforges & Abouchaar, 2003). This is because students are not interested in learning because the need for knowledge becomes less.
The teacher is able to develop this need and influence the motivation of students.
Pedagogical communication (Assilkhanova et al, 2014) is a system of limited socio-psychological interaction between a teacher and students, the content of which includes: exchange of information with students, educational influence, organization of relationships through communicative means. The initiator of this activity is a teacher.
Pedagogical communication should be emotional and personally developing. Professionalism of a teacher consists in overcoming natural difficulties of communication due to differences in the level of training, the ability to help students, to gain confidence in communication. It is important for teachers to realize that communication skills are not about keeping discipline in the classroom, but about sharing spiritual values with students (Assilkhanova et al, 2014). The common language with children is not the language of commands, but the language of trust. The main means of pedagogical communication is oral speech. The teacher's word should affect the feelings and consciousness of pupils, should provoke thinking and imagination, create the need for exploratory activity.
On Tuesday I had a trial lesson with a new online student. He is a young man of fourteen with cerebral palsy. My tutor had not warned me that he had a medical condition, so when I saw Andrei I mentally thanked UoPeople and the Understanding Barriers to Learning course for giving me the information I needed to work with children with this condition. After the lesson I received a feedback from a student: “ Hello,Galina! I have already conducted the lesson with Ekaterina! It was awesome! Especially, audio test (course we did). Ekaterina is good herself, very communicable. She appreciated my B2 English language level and my hobbies! To summarize up, lesson was very good! 👍 Thank you so much for so talented host!”.
I would like to note that during the lesson Andrei laughed a lot. When I asked him what he liked about laughing for the first time, he replied that it was an uncontrollable reaction to excitement. He was experiencing excitement because he was seeing me for the first time and it was manifesting itself in this way. Then I told him that I was also excited because I was seeing him for the first time, he had a high level of English and I wanted to be the best teacher for him. And because of this excitement, I make mistakes in my speech that I notice a few seconds after they are said. But I have a goal and no amount of embarrassment will stop me from achieving it. The uncontrollable fits of laughter were no longer discussed or brought to our attention.
This experience gave me a sense of flight and enthesiasm. I will definitely ask Andrei to let me listen to the songs he composes with the help of electronic programs. We will discuss books and events with him. And all of his Emotional Disorder issues we'll just ignore. Because no matter what, Andrei is a very brilliant young man with a promising future and a terrific sense of humor.
