Global Maritime Transport on the Brink of Collapse: US Port Strikes Threaten Chaos

Anticipated strikes at 36 ports along the US East Coast and Gulf Coast, potentially beginning as early as September 30, threaten to cripple global maritime transport, analysts warn. The port workers, numbering approximately 85,000, are demanding improved working conditions and higher wages.

Should the strike materialize, hundreds of vessels carrying billions of dollars in cargo would be stranded at sea. Rerouting to the US West Coast or other countries is not feasible. Ships will be forced to await the strike's end, leading to delays and port congestion.

"The consequences will be felt not only in the US, but on a global scale," says Xeneta's Chief Analyst, Peter Sand. "The delayed return of vessels to the Asia-Pacific region for subsequent voyages will disrupt supply chains and impact the delivery of goods as early as late December and January."

The situation is exacerbated by existing challenges in global shipping. Attacks on vessels in the Red Sea, issues with Panama Canal transit, and the recent Baltimore bridge incident – all contribute to the difficulties facing maritime transport.

Strikes at US ports could be the final straw. The global economy is already acutely feeling the repercussions of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. A new, widespread disruption in maritime transport could lead to product shortages, rising prices, and further deterioration of the economic landscape.
