Сегодня смотрим очень милый мюзикл «Вонка» с Тимоти Шаламе. Фильм рассказывает историю, предшествовавшую сюжету оригинальной повести Роальда Даля «Чарли и шоколадная фабрика». Несмотря на то, что фильм выглядит детским, он поднимает серьезные темы и критикует некоторые стороны капиталистического общества и его пороки. В целом фильм достаточно теплый и душевный.
С точки зрения понимания английского языка, все достаточно просто, несмотря на форму мюзикла. При этом часто встречаются старомодные слова, а также выражения, характерные исключительно для британского английского.

5. Warm the cockles (of somebody’s heart) - (British English) to make somebody feel happy or sympathetic
Examples: Doesn’t that story just warm the cockles of your heart?
6. Ts and Cs - (the abbreviation for terms and conditions) rules that you must agree to when you make a contract or an official agreement (условия использования)

7. Squirm - [intransitive] to move around a lot making small twisting movements, because you are nervous, uncomfortable, etc. (ерзать)
Examples: The children were squirming restlessly in their seats.
8. Morsel - a small amount or a piece of something, especially food (кусочек)
Examples: Every single morsel of food that we eat comes from nature. He ate it all, down to the last morsel.
9. Hoverfly – common name for a syrphid or other wasp-like fly that hovers and darts (цветочные мухи, сирфиды)
10. Bells and whistles - attractive extra features (прибамбасы, навороты)
Examples: The laptop has all the latest bells and whistles.
11. Watertight - that does not allow water to get in or out (водонепроницаемый)
Examples: The tarp in which he was wrapped was nearly watertight. The roof has been made watertight.
12. Roll call – the reading of a list of names to a group of people to check who is there (на перекличке)
Examples: Sir, this morning, Josiah wasn't at roll call.
13. Beady-eyed - watching carefully and noticing every small detail (с пронзительным взглядом)
Examples: We were being watched by a beady-eyed security guard
14. Dungarees - (British English) a piece of clothing that consists of trousers with an extra piece of cloth covering the chest, held up by long narrow pieces of cloth over the shoulders (комбинезон, рабочие брюки)
Examples: His dungarees were covered in grease.
I was just going to iron these old dungarees.
15. Contraption - a machine or piece of equipment that looks strange or complicated and possibly does not work well (штуковина)
Examples: This contraption is obviously incapable of taking anyone anywhere.
16. Solemn vow - a formal and serious promise to do something or a formal statement that is true (торжественное обещание)
Examples: The solemn vow each of us gave in time of peace will not be broken in time of danger.
17. Custard - (British English) a sweet yellow sauce made from milk, sugar, eggs and flour, usually served hot with cooked fruit, puddings, etc. (заварной крем)
18. Bludgeon - to hit somebody several times with a heavy object (избить дубинкой)
Examples: She had been bludgeoned to death.
19. Hare-brained - crazy and unlikely to succeed (легкомысленный, опрометчивый)

Examples: John suggested this hare-brained idea when he was in college but in the end it worked.
20. Thousandfold – multiplied by thousand (тысячекратно)
Examples: In our century our tasks have complicated thousandfold and the reasons are of great variety.
21. Brat – (informal, disapproving, rude) a person, especially a child, who behaves badly (отродье, сопляк)
22. Urchin – (old-fashioned) a young child who is poor and dirty, often one who has no home (беспризорник, сорванец)
23. Heist of the century - an act of stealing something valuable from a shop or bank (ограбление века)
Examples: It was called the heist of the century, and even now the police can't properly explain how it was done.
24. Trepidation - great worry or fear about something unpleasant that may happen (трепет, волнение)
Examples: We could all breathe again but we did so with tears and trepidation.
IDIOMS:
1. Every cloud has a silver lining - (saying) every sad or difficult situation has a positive side (нет худа без добра, луч надежды, положительная сторона)
Examples: Whatever it is you're running from, there's always a silver lining.
2. Have a sweet tooth - (informal) to like food that contains a lot of sugar (быть сладкоежкой)
Examples: I have a sweet tooth and eat a lot of candy.
