What was Peter’s musicallightbulb moment? Recalling the jam in 2008, he said: ‘I was down in the cellar of this country house playing music with some other people. I had taken LSD and was playing guitar with a wah-wah pedal…it felt as though I was breaking through the blues notation I’d been playing for years into something new. The drummer [Amon Düül II’s Peter Leopold] was playing a rhythm which was very different to any blues rhythm. The people I stayed with gave me a tape of some of my playing that day and I kept listening to it from time to time afterwards. I wish I could hear it again today but I accidentally left it in America a few years later.’ Then in the 2009 BBC4 Man Of The World documentary he said: ‘I did some great stuff on LSD in Munich…some fabulous stuff which I liked.’ … ‘[We got] the sound, interesting curious sound. I had a good play – it was great. Someone recorded that and they gave me a tape. There were other people playing along and playing with a few of us, just fooling around and it was, er, yeah, it was great’. In contrast, in that film Jeremy Spencer described the music coming from the basement as ‘the pits’, and then also as ‘repetitive drivel’ (reported in Uncut in March 2020).
Спустя некоторое время после проб и ошибок, нескольких выступлений, Грин решил записать сольный альбом, в котором попытался воплотить новые идеи. В результате запись представляла собой сведенный и доработанный микс нескольких джем-сессий в 1970 году.
Nick Buck did not recall that being so. According to his diary Peter’s first session was on Friday 5 June for the free-form The End Of The Game album. The remaining sessions took place on 7 June, 21-22 July, 24-25 July when the actual album was taped, and 30 July. Editing and mixing took place on 27-29 July and 8-9 August.
Сам Питер Грин несколько раз за последующие годы менял точку зрения на результат.
Peter’s views about The End Of The Game have changed over time. Harry Shapiro wrote in a career retrospective published in Record Collector in August 1993: ‘Peter’s long-time friend, Snowy White, believes that Peter “…was going in a really interesting direction. I thought his playing was superb on that album. He actually said to me, ‘I thought I was getting somewhere’, so I said, ‘Well, why did you stop?’ ‘Ah well, this and that…’”.’
But in 1994 he said: ‘There wasn’t enough there. When I was editing it I found out that there wasn’t enough to make up a record: it was only free-form.’
Then in 1997 he explained to Cliff Jones for The Guitar Magazine’s January 1997 issue: ‘End Of The Game helped a little. It taught me what was and what wasn’t possible. I made it as an experiment because I felt restricted. I’m still restricted and I can’t learn fast enough to say what I have inside…but I’m learning again. That was the problem in the beginning, I couldn’t play the things I heard in my head. It makes you want to give up sometimes. I thought maybe I could get closer to it by doing it that way. I don’t think it worked too well.’
But after Splinter Group formed in 1996 he tried to locate the master tapes, and also borrowed the author’s copy of his ‘Heavy Heart’ single. Then from the late 1990s he talked about making another free-form album – or ‘form-free’ as he often called it. Then in 2008 Peter said: ‘I spent a long time afterwards trying to edit those sessions and I’m not sure that I chose the best bits for the finished album. I’d really like to hear all the tapes we recorded again someday’.
Такжи и отзывы критиков были неоднозначными:
Released on 20 November, The End Of The Game did not chart. Critics were divided – a good indicator of how cutting-edge it was. Melody Maker’s Roy Hollingworth (14 November): ‘…for this is twice as good as anything he ever did with Fleetwood Mac…it’s a delight to hear Pete’s excellent playing again.’ Record Mirror (28 November): ‘…almost jungle rhythmic patterns overlaid by some of the best guitar-playing Peter has ever recorded.’ But Disc (21 November) thought otherwise: ‘Green is undoubtedly a fine guitarist but here seems to be in a void neither advancing nor deteriorating.’ December’s Beat Instrumental stated: ‘Sometimes going independent can be a mistake; as far as Green’s music is concerned it was a major catastrophe…Even Mr Green’s famous guitar technique is not very much in evidence, although it must be said if one takes each individual riff on its own merit then there are one or two nice pieces.’ Bruce Thomas in Rough Notes described it as, ‘heartaching, meandering and lost – speaking of hurt, but punctuated by the occasional explosion of intense luminosity.’
ВЛИЯНИЕ АЛЬБОМА
Years later the album impressed and inspired Alabama 3 and their fusion of country, blues, hip hop, electronica and acid rock. The band – whose 1997 track ‘Woke Up This Morning’ was played during the opening credits of the 1990s TV series The Sopranos – listened to it on their tour bus, as Rob Spragg (aka Larry Love) recalled: ‘Jake Black and me were discussing Miles Davis’s album In A Silent Way [1969], and Jake said, “Have you heard Peter Green’s The End Of The Game?” When I listened to it I thought what he was doing sonically and experimentally wasn’t that far off what Miles Davis was doing with Silent Way. The sonics on it are wicked.’ In 1994, Rob called ‘Bottoms Up’ prototype techno. ‘Rattlesnake Woman’ from Alabama 3’s 2016 Blues album was inspired by ‘Rattlesnake Shake’.
