Billy Bones
Billy Bones is a pirate who lives in our inn. He is a silent man. He often watches the sea through a telescope.
In the evenings, he sits alone with a glass of rum. Every day, he walks on the cliffs and when he comes back, he asks, 'Did any sailors come here today?'
He gives me a little money every month. ‘Promise me to look for a sailor with one leg, boy,' he says when he gives me the money. 'Tell me immediately if you see him.'
I can see that the captain is afraid when he says this. Sometimes I have terrible dreams about the man with one leg.
The captain often gets drunk. He sings sea songs loudly and makes the other customers at the inn sing with him. 'Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum!' Everybody sings. The house shakes with the noise. He tells terrible stories about pirates. They rob and kill people.
My father is worried because the other customers are afraid of the captain. 'Nobody will come to drink at the inn while he is here,' he said.
But one person from the village is not afraid of the captain. That is Doctor Livesey. He comes to see my father and then waits for his horse downstairs.
The captain is in the same room. Suddenly, he begins to sing.
“Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest!
Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum!
Drink and the devil will do the rest,
Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum !”
Doctor Livesey talks to a friend while the captain sings. The old sailor bangs his hand angrily on the table. Everyone becomes quiet except the doctor. He continues to talk calmly.
'Silence! I'm singing!' shouts the captain.
'Are you speaking to me?' asked Doctor Livesey. 'I am a doctor and I have only one thing to say to you. If you drink rum all the time, you will soon die!'
The captain is very angry. He takes a knife and threatens to kill the doctor.
“Put the knife back in your pocket, you dirty bandit”, said the doctor. 'If you don't, you will hang next week.'
The two men look at each other. Then the sailor puts down the knife and sits at the table.
'I am not only a doctor. I am also a judge,' said Doctor Livesey. 'You will go to prison if you do this again.'
Then the doctor leaves the inn, gets on his horse and rides back to the village.
