Letting Go of Labels: Three Situations where Labelling Hinders Growth

As humans, we have a tendency to label things, including people. Sometimes, these labels can be positive and uplifting, but more often than not, they can be negative and hurtful. When we label someone based on a single characteristic or behaviour, we are practicing a cognitive distortion called labelling.

Labelling can have a significant impact on our relationships with others, but it can also affect our own self-image. When we label ourselves, we limit our potential and put ourselves in a box, preventing growth and personal development. In this article, we will explore three human situations in which labelling can be detrimental and how we can overcome this cognitive distortion.

  • Situation 1: I'm such a failure
Margo has been struggling with her studies in university. She failed an exam, and she feels like a complete failure. She starts to label herself as a failure and believes that she will never be able to succeed. Maggie starts to avoid studying, thinking that there is no point, as she will never do well.

Solution: Reframe the situation

Margo needs to reframe the situation and see that failing an exam is not the end of the world. It does not define her as a person or her academic ability. She can seek help from her professor or a tutor to better understand the material. By seeking help and changing her mindset, Margo can overcome the labelling and get back on track with her studies.

  • Situation 2: He's so lazy
Julya has a coworker named Dima. She has noticed that Dima tends to take more breaks than others, and he sometimes appears to be doing nothing at all. She starts to label him as lazy and unproductive. Julya starts to become resentful towards Dima and treats him differently.

Solution: Challenge the label

Julya needs to challenge the label she has attached to Dima. Instead of labelling him as lazy, she can try to understand why he might be taking more breaks than others. Perhaps he has an underlying medical condition or a personal issue that is affecting his work. By approaching the situation with empathy and understanding, Julya can overcome the labelling and build a more positive relationship with Dima.

  • Situation 3: I'm too old for that

Dani has always wanted to try surfing, but he feels like he is too old to learn. He starts to label himself as too old and believes that he will not be able to learn a new skill. Dani starts to avoid opportunities to try new things, thinking that he is too old to do so.

Solution: Challenge the belief

Dani needs to challenge the belief that he is too old to try new things. Age is just a number, and there are plenty of people who learn new skills and hobbies at all ages. By challenging his belief and trying new things, Dani can overcome the labelling and live a more fulfilling life.

In conclusion, labelling is a cognitive distortion that can have a significant impact on our relationships with others and our own self-image. By reframing the situation, challenging the label, and challenging the belief, we can overcome this cognitive distortion and live a more positive and fulfilling life. Let's focus on the positives and let go of the negative labels we attach to ourselves and others.
