Instructional design theory offers detailed guidance on how to help people learn and develop. It involves various methods and principles that focus on how the student is going to learn rather than what the student is going to learn.
This week you have read about instructional design and its connection to learning theory.
Using Rothwell et al. (2015) as a guide, discuss your process for “selecting, developing, or modifying instructional materials” (pp. 189-194).
1. Select a lesson or unit that you regularly teach or plan to teach (e.g., the Holocaust, tectonic plates).
2. Prepare an outline of objectives for the lesson or unit.
3. Describe one of the resources available to augment the lesson (e.g., a video, a textbook) and evaluate it.
4. Why did you select this resource?
5. Are there any modifications that you would make before using the resource? If so, what and why? If not, why not?
Submission Instructions:
- The assignment should be within 750-1250 words and support your arguments with sources and evidence in APA format. For assistance with APA formatting, view the Learning Resource Center: Academic Writing.
- Use high-quality, credible, relevant sources to develop ideas that are appropriate for the discipline and genre of writing.

Using Rothwell et al. (2015) as a guide, I have revised and re-created a course to prepare students for the LTS exam. The main goal of students who need this course is to get a 6.5 or higher score in order to enter a European or American higher education institution.
While working on the plan, I made a list of the main aims and objectives of this course:
1 To set the ultimate goal of preparing for the LTS exam, i.e. what is the purpose of a certificate and what the passing score should be.
2 Familiarisation with the main parts of the exam (listening, interview, written and reading tasks), their content and duration.
3 Determining the strengths and weaknesses of the student's preparation for the exam (mock tests, proficiency tests, interviews, etc.).
4 Working through each part of the exam in the order that best suits the student, e.g. listening first, then reading, writing and interview.
5 Preparing for each section of the exam according to the following system: content
section, assessment criteria, number of tasks or parts, examples of tasks, development of the necessary skills to be effective in the examination.
6 Using modern interactive technologies to study vocabulary and grammar
7 Development of communicative and research skills for rapid adapt to exam conditions
8 Ongoing support and feedback from the tutor
9 Comprehensible homework assignments that help you develop skills and enjoy the learning process.
10 Learning techniques to develop stress resistance and concentration.
Next, I created a thematic plan with basic information on each section and useful resources. This plan can be used to work on thematic planning for both individual lessons and groups of students.

Each of the suggested resources was chosen taking into account the specifics of the skill to be developed in the student's learning. When compiling the topic plan, various doubts arose as to whether to use sources from the same author. This is due to the fact that in practice, each of the authors of the given list of resources has a certain style that can be traced in all learning materials, but it is important for the student to get information from different sources to repeat what has already been learnt and to fill in the gaps when repeating. There are times when an article by one author has less pertinent information on a tender subject than an article by another author.
I use several strategies when making a preparation plan.
- Research. Students can prepare for the vocabulary, grammar, and special phrases and expressions sections on their own using the links given to them by the teacher (Scholl, 2022).
- Blogger Content Analysis. There are many videos of other students taking different parts of the exam. However, not every video is useful and informative enough to serve as a resource for learning. One type of homework assignment could be to review videos on the topic of the unit and choose the most appropriate one (An, 2021).
- Create student’s own instruction on how to handle each of the questions on the GOPER model. In addition to learning the structure of the question and understanding the strategy for working with it, there are different ways to categorise the assignments. When a student creates his or her own instructions for describing, categorising and strategies for completing each of the tasks in a section, gains expert knowledge that can be applied more spontaneously (Stix & Conklin, 2014).
- Time management of assignments. Time management in an exam becomes a key ability that can help to get a higher score. Therefore, the student needs to be constantly reminded that any assignment must be completed in a certain number of minutes. The more often a student works with their sense of time and their reaction speed, the greater the ability to adapt quickly to the exam and be successful.
- Error Work. Error work necessarily requires correct answers that can explain the logic of what is happening. To work on errors, you need resources that not only provide primary information and structure, but can also explain each step of the work in detail so that you can work on errors.
In conclusion, the work of designing a new course of study is finished at this stage. However, any course should be developed, supplemented and restructured, redesigned with time, experience and learning outcomes. There is always room and opportunity for creativity.
