Essential oils are a type of liquid extracted from plants, well known for their earthy smells. Essential oils can be used for a number of things, they can be added to your bedsheets or bath water to create a relaxing aroma, they can be used to create perfumes and can be applied directly on your skin or even inhaled.
Here’s an easy DIY method that you can try at home to create your very own essential oils.
Things that you’ll need:
A saucepan with a lid
Distilled water
A few cups worth of fresh plants, enough to fill half of the saucepan.
The process:
First you should begin by cutting up the fresh plants into smaller pieces.
When cut, put the fresh plants into the saucepan and cover them with the distilled water, don’t flood the plants. Just enough water to cover them.
Cover the saucepan with it’s lid and turn the heat on high to bring the water to boil, once boiling turn it down and leave to simmer for approximately 3 hours.
After the plants are cooked, turn off the heat and carefully place the saucepan outside to cool down.
When the temperature has returned to normal, you should place the saucepan into a refrigerator. If it won’t fit, consider placing the contents into a different container and then refrigerate for a period of 12-24 hours.
After the specified time, carefully remove the container from the refrigerator. You should see that a film layer has formed on the top of the liquid and should be somewhat solid (this layer is the oil itself, carefully remove this layer from the container).
When removing the layer from the container, it’s recommended to wear plastic gloves and to work quickly, as the oil can melt due to your body temperature.
Quickly bottle up the oil and enjoy.
