Neophobia, otherwise known as: the fear of starting something new. It’s something that even the most confident of us have encountered, whether it be a mild or a severe case.
We procrastinate for hours on end, imagining how great our lives would be if only we had the confidence to push ourselves over the first hurdle of self-doubt. If I could just start, then surely I’d do great things, right?
Well, whether you want to try out a new extreme sport, step out in a new outfit that you’ve only dared to wear around the house so far, or to start a brand new hobby. Listed below are some steps to help you take that daunting first leap, and begin on the path of doing something new and fabulous in your life.
It’s a fact, we all fear the unknown in life, it’s just in our nature. Neophobia can trigger an unwelcome anxiety attack, so ease yourself into your new passion slowly. There’s no need to dive head first into the unknown. Dip your toe into the water first, acclimatize, and then go with the flow.
Realize that it’s okay when things don’t always go as you had envisioned. People often tend to rush in, and when things don’t go according to plan, they can quickly get disheartened, lose all hope and want to quit. Take your time and keep trying, practice makes perfect!
Enjoy the process of learning something new and have FUN. Sometimes we need to remember to be lighthearted and to just have fun with what you are doing. Don’t take yourself too seriously, letting go of our high expectations and just being silly and carefree can bring a lot of happiness, which can ultimately reduce anxiety.
STOP comparing yourself to others. We are all guilty of this but it’s important to remember, life is totally unique for each of us. No one can replicate our destiny, so take control of your life and your fears and create beautiful things, without always judging yourself too harshly. Life is a puzzle, and no one can ever arrange it in the same way as you.
Be your own biggest supporter. Self-support is a huge game changer, with self-belief and a sprinkle of confidence you can do almost anything. Look in the mirror and tell yourself reasons why you can conquer even your biggest of fears! You never know, it may be the best decision you ever make.
Seek out a community of likeminded people. Whilst you shouldn’t constantly compare yourself to others, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to have a group of likeminded people that can encourage you and each other to succeed in your new passions, this could be digitally or in real life. You may even make friends along the way.
And last but not least; be optimistic, look for the positives. Celebrate all of the small victories and appreciate how far you’ve came. You should be proud of yourself at any milestone you reach. You ventured out of your usual comfort zone and struggled with self-doubt and yet still you’ve achieved something new.
Armed with these tips, you are sure to do great in exploring your new passion!
