Do you agree that every little thing may influence our happiness level?
Like the way how we shape a single phrase.
Like the one considered below.
When we meet new people outside of our work circles, they are usually curious about our job. And of course, sooner or later you hear “What is your job?”. Probably you start your answer with description of what you are doing and then say where you are doing that. If you run your own business, you say so but if you are employed by a company that does not belong to you the way how you describe it depends. On what? Let’s have a look.
Basically, there are two options to address company ABC as your employer:
1. “I work in ABC”
2. “I work for ABC”
Does it make any difference for you if you go for Option 1 or 2?
For me it does. My choice is Option 1 because my position is: I always work for myself, no matter who is my employer. Why is that? Because I am the only one who makes decision to take or not to take a job offer, continue labor relationship with the present employer or terminate it in favor of another opportunity and so far, and so forth.
I have interesting conversations with people from different countries and they all ended up at more or less the same point:
- People who stated that they worked in their company were giving the same argumentation as I did above
- People who stated that they worked for their company normally did not see any difference between two options
Why do I find it important to distinguish “in” and “for” and stick with “in”? In my opinion, when you say “for” you accept the relationship where your employer makes decisions about you which makes your opinion matter much less than it deserves. It sets your mind in particular way and one day you find yourself unable to make personal decisions without your employer’s permission.
At the other hand, saying “in” does not give you an opportunity to share the weight of decisions and responsibility with anybody else (your employer in this case) and this approach may give you hard times from time to time but. Isn’t it a great feeling when you are the only one who sets your path?
Which option makes you feel happy?
