Two similar countries in the Middle East
Turkiye and Jordan are two countries with many similarities where their populations are dominated by Muslims. Therefore, the citizens of the two countries have similar agendas in their lives, and they are aware of the issues in the Middle East region. Jordan is next to Israel and Palestine, and under Syria while Turkiye is above Syria. Both countries' political agenda is quite similar. The armed conflict in Syria directly influences both countries' trade with their neighboring countries. Jordan has been the country where Palestinians receive human aid from other countries while Turkiye has always been supporting the struggle of Palestinians to gain their independence although Turkiye has some relations with Israel at the same time. Ignoring the political preferences of the Turkish governments and the Jordan Kingdom, improving the relations and the trade between the two countries can be a big plus for all the countries located in the Middle East region because these countries need to concentrate more on economic and social development instead of bombing each other. Turkiye and Jordan can create good examples of cooperation in the Middle East.
Bilateral trade between Turkiye and Jordan
Turkiye has strong trade relations with the European Union (EU) member countries and the US while Jordan mainly trades with the US, India, and Iraq. The trade volume between the two countries is around $1 billion, and that is much lower than expected between two countries located closely in their region. Sending a truck full of goods from Turkiye to Jordan takes less than a day while sending something from Turkiye to the US takes days. Therefore, the trade volume can be increased easily between the two countries.
Jordan's exports mainly include textiles, fruits and vegetables, minerals, and some other raw materials. Turkiye has relatively more technology exports as compared to Jordan. For instance, Jordan imports most of the machinery used in production while Turkiye has the potential to produce some machinery. Considering this fact, Turkiye and Jordan can create cooperation in technology, production, and trade.
Open areas for cooperation between Turkiye and Jordan
Turkiye and Jordan can develop cooperation in technology, production, and trade. Firstly, Jordan can transfer technological information and knowledge from Turkiye and decreases its dependency on imported technological products. Secondly, Turkiye can increase its machinery imports by selling machinery used in agricultural production. Turkiye is already selling agricultural production machinery to many African countries including Tunisia, Cameroon, Egypt, and Sudan. Similarly, Turkish producers can sell tractors and other machinery used in agricultural production by providing after-sale services. Turkiye imports some exotic fruits from Latin American countries while some of these fruits are produced in Jordan. The agricultural food imports have been increasing in Turkiye in recent years, and increasing agricultural products from Jordan can bring some logistic and cost advantages to Turkiye.
Another important area for developing cooperation between the two countries is to create access to new markets for both countries. Jordan is a new market for Turkey Jordan can enable Turkiye to reach further trade points in its region. Similarly, Turkiye can be an opening trade gate to access the European markets for Jordan. The foreign direct investments in Turkiye have been increasing in recent years because the countries are willing to benefit from the logistic advantages of Turkiye to reach the European markets. Jordan can follow a similar strategy to reach new markets while Turkiye can promote the Turkish producers to invest in Jordan to reach other countries around Jordan.
