Artificial Intelligence (AI) will change the world over the decade ahead. It is also going to change healthcare. Investors who spot the trends early enough and pick the winners may have a chance to reap extraordinary returns.
AI-based vaccine and drug discovery
The COVID vaccines were, in part, a success of AI and other technology. Moderna’s vaccine, for example, resulted from an AI-based platform that could find the right sequences quickly.
Compared to other non-AI-based methodologies, Moderna was able to come up with a vaccine much faster and start clinical trials.
In a sense, that success has revolutionized vaccine discovery, and AI may, in the future, enable companies to find vaccines and drugs for other diseases much more quickly.
AI technology in treatments
Similarly to drug discovery, AI can also support treatments by identifying which treatments best cure certain diseases.
AI can also improve medical devices used for treatments or surgeries by making them more accurate and efficient.
AI technology in insurance
The insurance industry uses AI in various ways, for example, to map the risks of individual patients more accurately. AI is also used to sift through huge amounts of client data and identify healthcare plans most suited for each customer.
A frontrunner in AI is the US-based healthcare and insurance provider UnitedHealth. Investors who bought their stock have been greatly renumerated in recent years. At around 24, the stock’s PE ratio is above the S&P 500’s historical average of 15, but considering the company’s positioning, it may be well worth paying that price.
Investors can benefit from the technology
Investors can benefit from technological progress in the Healthcare industry by buying the stocks of companies using AI to become industry pioneers in their specific domain.
Investors could also place their bets on tech companies involved in the AI value chain, for example, semiconductor chip manufacturers like TSMC or Intel or companies like ASML that provide equipment for chip manufacturing.
What’s clear is that AI will change healthcare significantly over the decade ahead. Investors should be onboard.
