In the Moscow region, ponds and rivers are starting to freeze over, and incidents on the ice have already become more frequent.
Ice presents danger! The air temperatures will fluctuate! Remember that ice should be at least 10 cm (15 cm in salt water) thick to be safe to stand or walk on.
Ice thicknesses can also be evaluated visually: blue colour indicates that it is thick enough, white means it is half as thick, and ice that is mottled grey or white is not safe.
The individuals most at risk during the winter are young children, especially when they are left without adult supervision. Explain to your children that they cannot play near freezing water bodies or go onto the ice.
If you have witnessed an emergency on the ice, call the Moscow Region Rescue Service by dialling "112"!
