Привычный вариант на русском: отказаться
Иногда при редактуре я чисто интуитивно правлю REFUSE на REJECT или наоборот. Решил разобраться. Много на каких форумах говорилось, что эти слова взаимозаменяемы. Однако ощущение того, что они все же разные никуда не ушло, и я решил копнуть дальше.
Выяснилось следующее:
— REJECT используется чтобы показать, что предложение рассмотрели, но принимать не стали;
— REFUSE используется, чтобы показать, что предложение даже рассматривать не стали и отвергли сходу.
Еще был вариант объяснения, что REJECT — это конкретное действие (материальный уровень), а REFUSE — неприятие чего-либо (идейный уровень).
Привожу варианты из мед и ИТ-источников, возможно, на них будет все это видно лучше.

• REJECT the patient for surgery due to the failure of her first bariatric surgery.
• He REFUSES primary surgical resection.
• Decisions made by the surrogate to accept or REFUSE treatment should reflect the best interests of the child.
• Clinicians often find REFUSALS troubling, especially with decisions to REFUSE life-saving therapies.
