Do you like the electric car? Does the electric car sell? Is the electric car a bluff as someone titles it to nine columns? How are things really?
The official data tell us of a market in continuous growth even if with numbers still very small. In June, Unrae figures tell us of 1,445 electric cars sold against 445 in June 2018. The total for the first 6 months of the year reached 4,967 units with a market share of 0.5%. Tesla Model 3 (372), Renault Zoe (351), Smart Fortwo (185) and ForFour (114) and Nissan Leaf (104) are the only ones to exceed 100 units in June.
To give you an idea of how the market is going:
1) 74,012 petrol cars registered in June (470,318 in the six months) were on the rise.
2) Diesel cars 72,088 (463,495 in the six months) down
3) hybrid cars 9,473 (58,017 in the six months) growing
4) natural gas cars 3,525 (16,833 in the six months) down
5) LPG cars 11,931 (72,582 in the six months) growing
Electric cars will also be very popular, but for now the electricity market represents 0.5%. Yet, according to the Auto Findomestic Observatory, which surveyed a panel of motorists in 16 countries around the world, in the next 5 years 57% of the sample surveyed worldwide declared that they will buy a hybrid car, especially in Mexico (80%), Italy (76%), Spain (75%) and Brazil (75%), while 43% replied that they will buy an all-electric car, with percentages that stand at around 70% in Mexico (72%), Brazil and China (68%).
Findomestic's analysis focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of electric vehicles. 86% of the respondents (83% in Italy) said they appreciate the fluidity of driving thanks to the burning acceleration and the absolute quietness of driving. The latter feature has convinced the EU to make it compulsory for electric vehicles to be fitted with an ava (Audible Vehicle Alert System) sound device to warn pedestrians of the car's passage.
Motorists are also attracted by the low cost of use and maintenance. It is curious to note that the Norwegians, who drive more electric cars worldwide, are sceptical: only 56% believe that the maintenance of an electric car is cheaper than the world average of 68%. And they know it.
The ecological character of electric cars is an important added value for 89% of car owners (93% in Italy), convinced that the use of e-car can significantly reduce pollution. And yet the electric car can paradoxically also increase Co2 emissions. One in three motorists is attentive to how the electricity that powers cars is produced and how batteries are disposed of. While French and Norwegian electric cars significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, those in the United States and, to a greater extent, China are more polluting than their thermal engine equivalents.
One of the weak points of electrification is the range: 54% (46% in Italy) of the sample would buy an electric car only if the range exceeded 300 km, a problem particularly felt in Spain (71%), Germany (67%) and France (62%). A big problem is the availability of fast charging stations.
"The future of the electric car - comments the president of Unrae Michele Crisci - will be very tied to the ability that the infrastructure will have to allow users to recharge continuously, quickly, widely spread both domestic and public, both in places where we work. We must not forget that our country also lives on tourism and therefore we must imagine a future in which tourists will have to recharge their cars. We will have to quickly adapt the infrastructure to allow our gross domestic product to be fed by the proceeds of tourism. The car of the future will certainly be an electric car, connected and shared. A period of transition is inevitable. We must take into account future technological developments but also the present situation, because in Italy we have 37 million vehicles 'outdated' with respect to these technologies".
