In the modern, post-industrial society there have been changes in the mass consciousness, we mean that the leading place on the scale of values is occupied by free time, that is, more and more people see the opportunity to realize their potential not in work, but their favourite occupation, in the expansion and improvement of social contacts, etc. Tourism provides an opportunity to spend this time for the benefit of the person.

The development of modern tourism is also facilitated by several external factors: increased awareness and education of the population, growth of welfare and free time, technological forms of the mobility of the population. The need to study the socio-cultural image of the modern tourist is dictated by some circumstances: firstly, recently, tourism has received a significant development and has become a mass social and economic phenomenon on an international scale. Secondly, the increase in tourist flows and the resulting changes in socio-economic, financial and other areas have become an essential factor of economic growth and progressive development of international relations. Thirdly, many aspects of tourist behaviour in modern society are forced. As researchers note, a system of informal coercion has been developed in society, which forces the individual to adopt certain models of behaviour formed by mass culture and universal "standardization" of a social being. Nowadays, tourism is becoming an indispensable element of the life of broad strata of society, manifested in different phenomena, relations and relationships, which determines the need for its classification, i.e. grouping on separate homogeneous characteristics, depending on certain practical goals.

At present, there are many definitions of tourists, which reflect the direction of the normative act and certain economic interests of the state by affiliation. Specialists have been working on this definition for more than 50 years. The first definitions of a tourist were formed in 1937 by the special committee of the League of Nations. In 1963, the UN Conference on International Tourism in Rome (Rome Conference Definition) considered the issues of tourism definitions. A definition of a tourist was adopted. With regard to the Russian conditions, this definition in its entirety looks as follows: a tourist - a person visiting the country (place) of temporary stay in therapeutic, recreational, cognitive, sports, professional, business, religious and other purposes without engaging in activities related to income from sources in the country (place) of temporary stay, for a period of 24 hours to 6 months in a row or carrying out at least one overnight stay in the country (place) of temporary stay.
