This is the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.

This is the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.

I took this picture while I was living in the city. I lived there for 3 years. Those were intense years. The city is already intense by itself. Being born and raised in São Paulo, one of the biggest metropolis of the third world, I thought that New York would be piece of cake. I was wrong. It does not have the criminality of São Paulo, but, in my experience, I has another type of aggressiveness: everything sounds louder than elsewhere, everybody seems to be more competitive than elsewhere, everyone seems to party more in New York than elsewhere and also get more wasted than elsewhere.

I was there during the 2008 economic crisis and it was not fun. After Lehman went belly up everything else became a huge nightmare for those working in banking. Seeing so many of my colleagues being laid-off every week and the fear of those who stayed was depressing.

More than ten years have passed and I still love visiting New York… but only as a tourist.
