#RedSquare Why is it called Red?

Many years ago when I started working at a British company in Russia, I got acquainted with so many incredible people who fell in love with Russia at first sight.

Once we discussed Red Square and there was a natural question - why is it called Red? My colleague was pretty sure it was called Red because of it’s colour 😱 He also made another guess of associating Red with revolution and communism #killerfact

Believe me, there is no colour or revolution or communism connection at all.

IN FACT

1️⃣ “Red” in Russian is “Krasnaya” (female), which used to mean “beautiful” in old Russian. #краснаяплощадь

2️⃣ Though we don’t use “krasnaya” as “beautiful” any longer, we still have expressions and set phrases, especially when we talk about beautiful girls - “krasnaya devitsa”/“beautiful girl” 👧

3️⃣ At Red Square you will see such a beautiful view, on the left you will see St Basil’s Cathedral, in front - you will see Lenin’s Mausoleum, on the right - State History Museum, and behind you - GUM

4️⃣ Red Square used to be a market place. Now it is closed to traffic and you will see hundreds of tourists enjoying the place.

5️⃣ It’s worth visiting Red Square at both day and night times. At night the Kremlin towers, St Basil’ domes and GUM are illuminated and it creates a spectacular panorama.
