Самая, на мой взгляд, важная городская легенда связана с Меркурием. С нее мы и начнем. Меркурий Смоленский. Когда Золотая Орда хозяйничала на Руси, на земле Смоленской родился и жил юноша Меркурий. Орда подошла практически к Смоленску, жители собрались в Успенском соборе и молились о защите от неприятеля. В это время в Печерском монастыре пономарю явился образ Богородицы, которая велела ему позвать к себе Меркурия. Когда юноша пришел, Богородица явилась к нему и сказала, что он должен идти и дать отпор войску Батыя. Там он и оставит этот мир: ему встретится "прекрасный воин" и отрубит голову. Подобрав ее, пойдет к родным стенам. Там и будет похоронен в церкви Богородицы. Люди будут его почитать как защитника. Этим он спасет родную землю от неприятеля. Молодой человек не верил в свои силы, но согласился на подвиг, получив благословение. Выйдя из церкви в полном обмундировании и сев на стоящего коня, он отправляется воевать. Своим мужеством и неуязвимостью ошарашивает войска Золотой Орды. Батый разворачивает свою армию и уходит в другие земли. А на пути Меркурия появляется предсказанный воин, который должен убить юношу. Меркурий отдает ему меч, и предсказание сбывается. Взяв свою голову он идет к Мологинским воротам, где падает и умирает. Конь исчезает. Тело пытались унести жители, но не смогли его поднять. Оно лежало у ворот три дня. Через три дня все увидели как Богородица, уложив его в свою полу, принесла его в соборную церковь и положила в гроб. С тех пор тело Меркурия находилось там. Однажды он явился тому же пономарю и попросил, чтобы над гробницей повесили щит и меч, обещая защиту городу от врагов. После того как поляки захватили Смоленск в 1611 году, собор был взорван. Once he appeared to the same sexton and asked that a shield and a sword be hung over the tomb, promising to protect the city from enemies. After the Poles captured Smolensk in 1611, the cathedral was blown up. The body was lost, but the sandals of Mercury are still kept in the Assumption Cathedral. The chronicle says that the horse disappeared, but there is another legend. According to her, the skull of the horse of Mercury is walled up in the fortress wall, protecting the city from enemies. They say that as soon as danger threatens, a loud horse neighing is heard from the wall.
