And during the 11th Century, this superb city was the largest city in England, after London - impressive! During the Roman conquest of Britain the Celtic Iceni tribe occupied East Anglia. A few hundred years later, Anglo-Saxon ‘Norvic’ had formed around the confluence of the Rivers Wensum and Yare. By 575AD King Uffa had made Norvic a royal city and capital of East Anglia with its own mint. Saxon Norvic centred around Tombland, meaning ‘open space’ which is where the marketplace was located. Today this area is called The Cathedral Quarter. Through the 20th century and to the present day, Norwich has continued to evolve. The 1930s saw the building of the revolutionary Art Deco City Hall overlooking the marketplace, and in 1963 the University of East Anglia (UEA) admitted its first students. Whether visiting for a day or weekend, there are plenty of free activities, places to see and things to do in Norwich. Norwich boasts museums spanning a ten centuries of history as well as a renovated city center with a pleasant pedestrian area lined with modern businesses and thriving nightlife. With two colleges, both with renowned art and writing programs, travelers will also step into a vibrant cultural scene. Tourist sites, dubbed the Norwich 12, include the historical Norwich Castle, Norwich Cathedral and City Hall, as well as the newer library and the glass Forum which hosts events from opera to skating. Norwich UK has more medieval churches than any other city in Western Europe north of the Alps. This was all thanks to the wool trade back in those days. Dotted around the city you’ll come across these churches.
