For those of our members who are not familiar with Russian culture, “a magical time called Christmas is loved in Russia as well as all over the world. Christmas in Russia commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, is celebrated on 25 December in the Julian calendar used by the church, which falls on 7 January in the common Gregorian calendar. This public holiday is celebrated by Russians as one of the main high days of the year. The ancient pagan culture formed many customs of Russia’s Christmas. From the end of December to January people performed different rituals, asking pagan gods for a fruitful year, and held a winter festival called Koliada. After the adoption of Christianity, such rituals mixed with the new customs into unique Christmas traditions that Russians still adhere to.”
Gifts How New Year is celebrated in Russia No New Year's Eve is without presents. From the beginning of December, or even earlier, people start looking in the stores to find something really interesting for their family and friends. When a gift is chosen, it is beautifully wrapped and most often put under the Christmas tree. The ceremonial unpacking of the presents takes place as early as January 1. Santa Claus also does not forget to gift adults and children! He comes at night, when everyone is asleep, and leaves beautiful packages under the tree. The good tradition of exchanging gifts on New Year's Day makes this holiday even more magical and fabulous. Do not be lazy to make really pleasant surprises to your loved ones, because it will give them unforgettable emotions for the whole next year!
