Scientists have irrevocably slowed down the speed of light The speed of light does not change. It's constant, isn't it? But no! Scientists from two universities in Scotland have been able to slow down light passing through airless space. The experiment, carried out jointly by the Universities of Glasgow and Herriot-Watt, is likely to change the way modern science approaches light. The results of the study were published in the journal Science Express. The speed of light is believed to be absolute. In vacuum it is equal to 299,792,458 m/s. Light travels more slowly inside water or glass, but speeds up again when it moves into the vacuum of air. A new study has shown that slowed-down photons can maintain their speed. “We achieved the slowdown effect using some subtle but well-known optical principles,” the physicists said. The researchers passed photons—individual particles of light—through a special mask. This changed their spatial structure and slowed down their speed. The photons continued to travel below the speed of light even when they returned to vacuum. They lagged behind the unchanged photons by about 20 wavelengths of light - about 11 millionths of a meter, writes The Irish Times. The new approach worked when photons passed through both air and vacuum. It also works with a beam of light and, scientists hope, is also suitable for other types of waves. We believe that the effect can be applied to any wave theory. In a similar way, you can slow down, for example, the speed of propagation of sound waves, the scientists said.
