King Henry VIII was born on 28 June 1491. He was brought up by his devout Catholic grandmother Margaret Beaufort. The monarch himself was a devout and well - informed Catholic and his publication Defense of the Seven Sacraments in 1521 earned him the title of the Defender of the Faith from Pope Leo X.
