Hybrid Grinding Media Upgrade: Ceramic Cylinder + Steel Forging for Overflow Ball Mill
Real field case: Φ3.2×5.4 m overflow ball mill for gold ore fine grinding, upgraded with ceramic column + steel forging hybrid grinding media.
Before retrofit, the mill ran on full steel forgings, suffering from high power draw, fast media wear, and over-grinding, which hurt gold flotation performance. We adopted a mixed media loading formula: 16 tons of ceramic columns + 14 tons of steel forgings.
Key achieved results:
✅ Mill operating current dropped from 70A to 55A, lower power consumption
✅ Pulp concentration stabilized at 69%; -200 mesh fineness maintained at 75%
✅ Over-grinding completely eliminated, optimized particle size for flotation
✅ Daily steel forging replenishment reduced from 500 kg to 250 kg; only 50 kg ceramic columns added daily
✅ Annual media cost saving: 314,600 RMB
Mechanism: Steel forgings deliver impact crushing for coarse particles, while ceramic columns provide surface attrition and fine stripping. The combination balances impact and fine grinding, avoids over-crushing of valuable minerals, and creates favorable conditions for gold recovery.
This hybrid media solution is proven for gold concentrators aiming to cut operating costs, save energy, and stabilize grinding indicators. It can also be referenced for copper, lead-zinc, and other mineral milling circuits.
