"Conscious experience is part of the natural world, and like other natural phenomena, it requires explanation. There are at least two main things to explain here. The first and most important is the very existence of consciousness. Why does conscious experience exist? If as seems plausible - it is generated by physical systems, then how does this happen? This leads to more specific questions. Is consciousness itself physical, or does it simply accompany physical systems? How widespread is consciousness? Does conscious experience exist, for example, in mice?
The second thing that requires explanation is the specific nature of conscious experience. If we accept the existence of conscious experience, then why are specific experiences structured the way they are? When I open my eyes and look around my office, why do I experience a variety of experiences of precisely this kind? Or more fundamentally: why does red appear the way it does? It seems conceivable that looking at something red, say a rose, could produce the same experience as looking at something blue. Why is this experience? And why, by the way, does our sensation feel reddish, rather than something completely different, like the sound of a trumpet?"
