Winter cycling is fun…
And today there was a rare chance for cycling BECAUSE we have frosty weather (and you can comfortably travel along frozen paths) and not much snow yet (you won't be drowned under the snow)))
I was almost alone on the path (met a couple of cyclist and that was all)…
Some advice for those who would like to try it:
-to cycle safely in a town or in the country, the primary focus should be on the ice on the paths (sometimes covered with snow)
-use wide tires with a good tread or winter tires with spikes (studded winter tires)
-lower your tire pressure slightly to increase the contact
-dress in layers, which means to put on several light things one over another instead of dressing in one warm heavy jacket
-protect your hands, feet, and head with mittens, thermal socks, overshoes, and a thermal cap or balaclava and here again I would recommend to wear several mittens (put one mitten over another in cold weather for extra warmth,) and overshoes is a great idea (several layers again)
Your clothing should be loose.
The most vulnerable thing to cold is your hands. And there is a trick with small bottles filled with hot water. You can use them as a hand warmer. Just put them inside a spare pair of mittens and keep among other spare clothing in a rucksack. Change cold mittens for warm ones from a rucksack when you need it.
