Amazon Cam Company To Pay Out Millions For Spying On Users
Amazon’s Ring camera company has agreed to pay out $5.8 million after it was accused by the US government of major privacy violations (and if the US government thinks you’re going too far with your snooping, you know it’s bad).
The main charge against Ring was ‘failing to restrict employees’ and contractors’ access to its customers’ videos,’ a policy which ‘exposed consumers to spying and harassment.’
Hundreds of Ring employees and third-party contractors were reportedly given ‘full access to every customer video, regardless of whether the employee or contractor needed that access to perform his or her job function.’ This is thought to have led to countless privacy breaches, including one notable but not unique case in which a male Ring employee ‘viewed thousands of video recordings belonging to at least 81 unique female users.’
