The Young Martyr is an oil painting by the French painter Paul Delaroche, 1853.
At first sight it quite reminds of “Ophelia” by John Everett Millais.
The idea of this picture dates back to the time of the serious illness of Delaroche, and he considered it "the saddest and most holy" of all his works.
This picture has two originals - one is in the Paris Louvre, another one is in the Hermitage of St. Petersburg in Russia.
By the way, artists quite often create several copies of their paintings. For example, Claude Monet painted "Rouen Cathedral" 30 (!) times, every time with different lighting. Even Malevich, having sold his "Black Square", realized that he couldn’t live without the picture and re-wrote his masterpiece ◼️
