#️⃣#️⃣#️⃣ Episode 20: The Reading Rebellion 📚😴

#️⃣ It was a rainy Sunday afternoon. Alex was scrolling through his phone 📱, Tom was watching wrestling highlights 🤼, and Lily was posting selfies. Not a single book could be seen anywhere in the house. Sarah walked into the living room, looked around, and sighed.

"When was the last time any of you opened a book?"

Tom thought for a moment.

"Last year. A textbook. Does that count?" 📖🥱

"Books are boring, Mom," said Lily. "Everything is on the internet."

"I read subtitles," Alex added. "That's reading." 🎥

John slowly lowered his newspaper and looked at the children.

"That's it. Tonight, no phones. No screens. We're talking about books."

#️⃣ The children looked horrified, as if John had announced a month without pizza. 🍕😱 Tom groaned. Lily rolled her eyes. Alex looked as though he had just received terrible medical news. John couldn't help but laugh.

"Relax. Let me tell you about my favorite book first."

He picked up a worn copy of The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway 🎣.

"When I was twenty-five, I read this book for the first time. It's about an old fisherman who fights a giant fish for three days. In the end, sharks eat the fish, but the old man never gives up."

Tom frowned.

"So... he worked hard for nothing?"

"No," John replied. "He proved something to himself. This book taught me that success isn't always about winning. Sometimes it's about refusing to quit. When I was training to become a locomotive engineer 🚂, things weren't always easy. Whenever I felt like giving up, I remembered that old fisherman."

Lily looked genuinely surprised.

"That's actually... deep."

John smiled.

"See? Books can be deep."

#️⃣ Sarah then picked up a book from the coffee table.

"My favorite book is When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi." 🩺

Alex immediately became interested.

"Wait... wasn't he a neurosurgeon?"

Sarah nodded.

"He was. He wrote this book while he was dying of cancer. He writes about life, death, family, and why we do what we do." The room became unusually quiet.

"It changed the way I see my patients," Sarah continued. "It reminded me that people are more than symptoms and medical charts. I honestly think it made me a better doctor."

Alex leaned forward.

"Can I borrow it?"

Sarah nearly dropped the book.

"That's the first time you've asked for a book in five years." 😄

||Эта книга помогла мне стать лучшим врачом и лучше понимать своих пациентов.||

#️⃣ Suddenly, John stood up.

"I have an idea!"

The children immediately looked nervous. Everyone knew that whenever John said those words, chaos usually followed. 😂

"We're having a reading challenge!" A collective groan filled the room.

"Each of you chooses one book. Any book. Read at least twenty pages. Then we'll talk about it next Sunday."

"Do comics count?" asked Tom.

"No, Tom."

"What if we hate the book?" Lily asked.

"Then choose another one. But you have to give it a chance."

Tom crossed his arms.

"I'm only reading something about wrestling."

"Fine," said John.

"I'll find something about travelling," Lily said.

Alex looked at Sarah's book.

"I think I'll start with that one."

Sarah smiled.

"That's a start."

||Каждый выбирает книгу, читает хотя бы двадцать страниц, а потом мы её обсуждаем.||

#️⃣ During the following week, something unexpected happened. Tom found the autobiography of a famous wrestler who had lost everything before becoming a champion. Lily discovered a travel memoir written by a young woman who journeyed alone across Europe 🌍. Alex started reading Sarah's book and quickly became absorbed in it. Every evening, the family spent less time staring at screens and more time talking about what they had read. Sometimes they agreed. Sometimes they argued. And sometimes Tom clearly hadn't finished the chapter and tried to guess what happened anyway. 😂

#️⃣ One week later, the family gathered around the dinner table.

"So," John asked, "was the reading challenge worth it?"

Tom nodded first.

"I read about a wrestler who lost everything and came back stronger. It was actually really good."

"I couldn't put my book down," Lily admitted. "I wanted to know what country she would visit next."

Alex looked at Sarah.

"Mom... your book made me cry."

Everyone laughed.

#️⃣ John raised his glass of his "juice".

"To reading."

"To books," Sarah added.

"And to the O'Connors," said Alex.

"Who finally opened a book," Lily finished.

Tom nodded seriously.

"A good book is like a good friend."

Sarah smiled proudly. Then Tom added:

"But pizza is still better." 🍕🤣

The entire family burst out laughing.

Some things never change in the O'Connor family. ❤️

#️⃣ Sometimes you need to put down your phone and pick up a book. John found determination in Hemingway. Sarah found compassion in Kalanithi. And the children discovered that reading isn't boring at all — it's a door to another world. 🚪✨

||Иногда нужно отложить телефон и взять книгу. Джон нашёл силу и упорство в книгах Хемингуэя. Сара научилась ещё лучше понимать людей. А дети поняли, что чтение — это вовсе не скучно, а дверь в другой мир.||
