Officially, the bird was established as a symbol of peace at the World Congress of Peace Supporters, held simultaneously in Paris and Prague in 1949. In total, it was attended by over 2,000 delegates from national and international organizations. They were people of different political views and religious beliefs, different professions, cultures and traditions, different statuses and affluence. But they all had one thing in common – they sincerely wanted peace.
One of the founders of the movement, Professor and Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry Frederic Joliot-Curie, took the first floor at the congress: "We have gathered here not to ask for peace from supporters of war, but to impose peace on them."
