Airborne Forces Command and further service

From August 1987 to January 1989, Colonel-General Kalinin commanded the Airborne Troops of the USSR. Then, from January 1989 to August 1991, he headed the Moscow Military District— one of the key districts of the country. After the well-known events of August 1991, he was removed from office, was under investigation for some time, but then the criminal case was dismissed.

From December 1991 to February 1992, he served as Chief of Staff of the Western Direction, and from April 1992 he headed the Malinovsky Military Academy of Armored Forces.

For exemplary performance of his official duties, Colonel-General Kalinin was awarded the Orders of the October Revolution, the Red Banner, "For Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces" II and III degrees, and many medals. After retiring in 1993, he actively participated in public life, was a member of the Supervisory Board of the Union of Paratroopers of Russia, worked to promote the heroic traditions of the Airborne Forces and educate young people, for which he was awarded the Order of Honor.

Nikolai Vasilyevich Kalinin passed away on March 7, 2008 after a long illness, just three days before his 71st birthday. He was buried in Moscow at the Troekurovsky Cemetery, where a monument was unveiled on May 14, 2010.

Remembering today the eleventh commander of the Airborne Forces, we pay tribute to a man whose life path — from cadet to general — became an example of selfless service to the Motherland and the Airborne Forces.

Eternal memory!
