Invited expert Dr Shushu Chen, Associate Professor in Sport Policy and Management at the University of Birmingham (UK) and Visiting Professor at the Capital University of Physical Education & Sports, China. Her research focuses on sport policy, major sporting events and their social impact — including how governments use sport to address issues such as health, participation and social inequality.
During the week, students explore how sport policy is created, implemented and evaluated in different countries. The unit examines real policy decisions — from national strategies to major events — and asks an important question: does sport policy actually work? Participants learn how governments decide to invest in sport, why public money is allocated to certain programmes, and how policy decisions influence grassroots participation and Olympic success.
Through lectures and workshops, students analyse real cases, discuss sport strategies in their own countries and learn how research and evidence shape policy decisions. The unit culminates in a group project where students examine a sport policy decision and develop their own policy brief with recommendations.
