#️⃣#️⃣#️⃣ Common Mistakes in English: Say / Tell / Speak / Talk
#️⃣Many English learners confuse these four verbs. They all mean “говорить”, but they are used differently. Even the O'Connor family sometimes makes funny mistakes when speaking English 😄 Let’s make everything clear and simple.
1️⃣ SAY – focus on words
We use say when we focus on what someone says, not the person who listens.
❌ John said me the news.
Джон сказал мне новости.
✅ John said the news to Sarah.
Джон сообщил новости Саре.
✅ Sarah said she was tired after work.
Сара сказала, что устала после работы.
#️⃣💡Remember: with say we usually do NOT put a person immediately after the verb.
2️⃣ TELL – always with a person
We use tell when we mention who receives the information.
Structure: tell + someone + something
❌ Alex told that he was busy.
Алекс сказал, что он занят.
✅ Alex told his parents that he was busy.
Алекс сказал родителям, что он занят.
✅ Sarah told Tom to clean his room.
Сара сказала Тому убрать комнату.
💡If there is no person, we usually use say, not tell.
3️⃣ SPEAK – formal situations or languages
We use speak in more formal contexts or when talking about languages.
✅ Sarah speaks English and Italian.
Сара говорит по-английски и по-итальянски.
✅ John needs to speak to his manager.
Джону нужно поговорить со своим начальником.
#️⃣It sounds more official than talk.
4️⃣ TALK – conversation
We use talk for general conversations and informal communication.
✅ Lily talked to her friends for hours.
Лили разговаривала с друзьями часами.
✅ Tom and Lily are talking about their wrestling competition.
Том и Лили разговаривают о соревнованиях по борьбе.
💡Talk is more relaxed and friendly.
#️⃣🔥 Quick Comparison
say → words
tell → person
speak → formal / languages
talk → conversation
#️⃣If John says something, Sarah tells the children, Alex speaks at university, and Tom and Lily talk all evening — everything is correct 😄
