#️⃣#️⃣#️⃣ O’Connor Grammar: Questions Inside Sentences

When a question becomes part of a longer sentence, the word order changes. We use normal statement order (subject + verb).

Когда вопрос становится частью более длинного предложения, порядок слов меняется.

#️⃣ Do you know where…? / I don’t know why… / Could you tell me what…?

Direct question:

“Where has Tom gone?”

Longer sentence:

Do you know where Tom has gone?

Ты знаешь, куда ушёл Том?

❌ NOT: where has Tom gone

Another example:

Direct question:

“Why is Lily upset?”

Embedded:

I don’t know why Lily is upset.

Я не знаю, почему Лили расстроена.

#️⃣ He asked me where… (Reported Questions)

The same word order change happens in reported speech.

Direct speech:

The coach asked Tom, “Where are you going?”

Reported speech:

The coach asked Tom where he was going.

Тренер спросил Тома, куда он идёт.

Direct speech:

The interviewer asked Alex, “What time do the lectures start?”

Reported speech:

The interviewer wanted to know what time the lectures started.

Интервьюер хотел узнать, во сколько начинаются лекции.

#️⃣ 🔎 Remember

1️⃣ No inversion in longer questions.

2️⃣ Same rule in reported speech.

3️⃣ Word order becomes calm and direct.

Even in the noisy O’Connor house, grammar keeps perfect order 😉
