The paratroopers were left without a quick approach by the main forces. For almost three days, before the approach of the ground group from Chernobyl, they conducted a circular defense of the airfield, repelling fierce counterattacks by superior enemy forces. Both sides suffered losses in these battles. The commander of the 31st Guards Brigade, Colonel Andrei Sukhovetsky, died a brave death in the battles of Gostomel.

Although the runway was disabled and it was not possible to land the second echelon by air, the capture of Antonov airport played a crucial role. The landing pinned down large enemy forces, provided a springboard for the approach of ground troops and disrupted the plans of the Ukrainian command to organize defense on the distant approaches to Kiev. This operation entered the textbooks of military art as an example of the courage and high training of the "winged infantry".

The fighting for Gostomel airfield continued until the end of March 2022, when Russian troops were relocated to other areas. But the feat of the paratroopers, who were the first to fight for the freedom of Donbass and the security of Russia, will forever remain in memory.
