When he was twelve, he was swept away by a flash flood. Faidley was conducting his first "chase" along the banks of a swifty flowing river. Suddenly, the bank gave way and he fell into the flood waters. He was carried under water and held the breath. Then his foot found a rock and Faidley stuck his head above the water. He survived.
